In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2025, Allen County Job and Family Services (ACJFS) is reaffirming its commitment to protecting seniors from abuse and neglect. This observance emphasizes our collective responsibility as a community to safeguard its most vulnerable members.
The Role of Adult Protective Services (APS)
At the heart of this mission is the Adult Protective Services (APS) unit at ACJFS. APS plays a crucial role in investigating reports of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. In collaboration with families, social service agencies, and other community partners, APS ensures that seniors receive the care and support they need. These services include case management, legal assistance, and mental health support, all aimed at protecting vulnerable adults in our community. If you suspect elder abuse, we encourage you to contact APS at (419) 999-0251. In emergency situations, please reach out to local law enforcement immediately.
A Proclamation from the Allen County Commissioners
Recently, the ACJFS team had the honor of joining the Allen County Commissioners for a formal proclamation recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. During the ceremony, Director Joe Patton, IM Administrator Deana Basinger, APS Coordinator Bob Fisher, Fraud Supervisor Ally Garlock, and APS/Fraud Investigator Karlee Turner were present to reaffirm our agency’s ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable seniors. This proclamation serves as a public declaration of our shared responsibility to raise awareness about elder abuse and prevent further harm.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Allen County Commissioners for acknowledging this important issue and for their continued support of the vital work being done in our community.
Raising Awareness in the Community
As part of the effort to end elder abuse, ACJFS encourages all community members to wear purple on June 16. This simple act of solidarity helps spread awareness about elder abuse and reinforces our collective commitment to protecting older adults in Allen County and beyond.
Statewide Efforts to Combat Elder Abuse
On a larger scale, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) are working tirelessly throughout the month of June to raise awareness and combat elder abuse. By providing resources and support to local APS units, these state agencies strengthen our collective response to this critical issue.
How You Can Help
You can play a role in protecting seniors by learning the signs of elder abuse, maintaining open communication with older adults, and promptly reporting any concerns to APS. Together, we can create a safer environment for all members of our community.
