When Laura graduated with her bachelor’s degree, she found herself in a familiar place of most job seekers; searching for not just a job, but a meaningful career. It was during this transitional period that a current employee at OhioMeansJobs Allen County encouraged her to apply for an internship. The opportunity to gain real-world experience, connect with the community, and explore career possibilities was too valuable to pass up.
Since joining the team, Laura’s time at OMJ has been nothing short of transformative. Personally, and professionally, the experience has helped her grow in ways she didn’t expect. One of the most impactful lessons she’s learned is the power of empathy. “OMJ has shown me how important it is to treat everyone with kindness and understanding,” she shares. “Everyone who walks through our doors has a story, and showing compassion can truly go a long way.”
Working in such a fast-paced environment has also strengthened Laura’s organizational skills. With a steady flow of clients and responsibilities each day, she’s learned how to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize her time, and stay focused under pressure. Beyond that, her ability to build connections with coworkers, clients, and community partners has flourished. Laura’s internship has also given her a deeper understanding of workforce development and how critical community engagement is in helping people succeed. “What’s special about OMJ is how closely we work with local employers,” she explains. “We take time to get to know our customers so we can connect them with jobs that truly fit their needs. I’ve been on both sides; I came here first as a job seeker. Now, as an intern, I’ve been able to witness the full circle of support this place offers.”
Through it all, Laura has come to value communication, creative problem-solving, and teamwork- skills she knows will serve her well in any future role. But perhaps even more importantly, she’s gained confidence in her ability to adapt, learn, and contribute meaningfully to the world around her.
